WUSD Thresholds for Extreme Weather Events

      • For elementary grades (preschool through 5th grade) using the CDPH CalHeatScore Tool: 
        • Modify activity at HeatRisk ≥2 (Orange).
        • Cancel outdoors at HeatRisk≥3 (Red/Magenta). 
      • For Secondary grades (6th through 12 grade):
        • Follow California Interscholastic Federation guidelines, using wet bulb temperature measurements. Their policy can be found here.
          • A “wet bulb” temperature will be taken (per CIF guidelines)  to determine behavior related to PE classes, outdoor activities, and after school activities and practices. 
          • Wet bulb temperatures may be taken more than once per day, if it appears conditions are changing throughout the day. They could also be taken in different locations if deemed necessary.
    • National Weather Service Wind Advisories Default threshold:
      • Limit outdoor activity during NWS Wind Advisory (≥31 mph sustained or ≥46 mph gusts)
      • Cancel at Warning Level ≥40 mph sustained or ≥58 mph gusts).
    • CDE Air Quality Guidance + AirNow.gov Default threshold:
      • Airquality determined by AirNow.
      • Reduce activity at AQI ≥101 (Orange/Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups).
      • Suspend all outdoor activity at AQI ≥151 to 300 (Red/Unhealthy, Purple/Very Unhealthy, Burgundy/Hazardous). 
  • Cancel outdoor activity when NWS flashflood watch or warning is issued within district boundaries.

    • Suspend outdoor activity when lighting is seen within 6 miles.
    • Resume 30 minutes following the last sighting
    • Modify outdoor activity when below 32 degrees with windchill.
    • Cancel outdoor activity when below 28 degrees.
