The CPAs are a network of approximately 400 programs supported by competitive state grants in California’s public high schools. Begun in 1985, the CPAs are designed to prepare students for both college and careers. Research has consistently demonstrated their impact on student motivation, high school performance and post-secondary earnings.
CPAs receive grant funding from the California Department of Education each year for 10th-12th grade students. The funds are designed to support student engagement through enrichment and motivational activities, provide extra academic support when needed, and offer valuable work-based learning opportunities. Like all cores at WHS, the CPA model gives students a sense of community while at school and helps them gain valuable skills that will help them in any work or educational environment.
Windsor High School has five California Partnership Academies with the following Career focus areas:
Arête Media Academy is a CPA with a Media Arts CTE pathway. Arête students use technology, media arts, and industry practices to strategically connect, communicate, collaborate, create, and publish their work for an authentic audience. Students gain proficiency in industry-standard software and are immersed in a project-based environment. The training offered in the academy provides a firm foundation for further education in Media Arts, includes internships with local industry professionals and exposure to post-secondary educational institutions. Coursework develops the skills required for success in post-secondary education and professional work environments including problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration, and written and verbal expression. The CPA grant funds this program’s enrichment activities, field trips, academic support program, technology, and guest speakers.
Axis STEM Academy is a CPA with embedded CTE courses from Project Lead the Way. Honors and non-honors students gain skills that support college and career goals in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. They learn to investigate and question the interrelated facets of the modern world and the intersections of engineering, design technology and culture including several hands-on design-build projects each year. The training offered in this academy provides a firm foundation for further education in the Engineering and Architectural Design industry sector, and includes internships with local industry professionals and exposure to post-secondary educational institutions. The CPA grant funds the program’s enrichment activities, field trips, academic support program, technology, and guest speakers.
The Windsor High School BUILD Academy is a CPA focused on the building and construction industry. Students gain practical, hands-on experience in construction, project management, and industry-specific skills, while preparing for both college and the workforce. The program offers opportunities to earn an OSHA certification, develop proficiency with construction tools, and receive training in project management, estimating, and material acquisition. The program emphasizes real-world, project-based learning, teamwork, time management, and industry standards. Students collaborate with industry professionals on work-based learning projects and are exposed to career opportunities in the building and construction trades. The BUILD Academy develops skills in problem solving, collaboration, and communication, which are essential for professional success. The program’s curriculum integrates core academic subjects with specialized training, and students receive ongoing support from teachers throughout the two-year program. Enrichment activities, field trips, academic support, and industry guest speakers are made possible through the program’s partnerships and resources.
Business and Hospitality (formerly Vineyard) Academy is a CPA with a Food Service and Hospitality CTE pathway. Topics and projects in this Focus Area involve learning aspects of running a business, writing a complete business plan, presenting an investment opportunity (pitch) to adults in the community and participating in a range of projects visible in the Windsor and Sonoma County communities. Coursework develops the skills required for success in post-secondary education and professional work environments including problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration, written and verbal expression, including many public presentations. Students work with industry professionals to learn about careers, complete senior projects and job shadows. Students earn Food Handlers certifications and will examine the intersections and economic impact of local tourism and hospitality industries. The CPA grant funds the program’s enrichment activities, field trips, academic support program, technology, and guest speakers.
Nueva is a CPA with a Production and Managerial Arts CTE pathway. Honors and academic students work collaboratively in a project-based environment. Nueva students gain proficiency in industry standard Adobe software, develop professional websites and may have opportunities to earn industry certifications and early college credit. Students work with industry professionals to complete work-based learning projects, and to design, market, and produce live stage productions twice each year. Coursework develops the skills required for success in post-secondary education and professional work environments including problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration, and written and verbal expression. The CPA grant supports the program’s enrichment activities, field trips, academic support program, technology, and guest speakers.
Windsor is thrilled to be one of the few Districts to be able to offer CTE pathways that start in middle school, with our Vineyard Academy Harvest program and our SoCo BUILD programs. In addition, WMS offers "Introduction to Professional Theater," an introductory/exploratory class following AME standards and prepares students for AME pathways at the high school including Nueva. All of these programs feed directly into the corresponding high school programs and offer an introduction to what CTE pathways have to offer.
Tenth grade students at WHS have an opportunity to participate in a themed or exploratory core, including several that feed directly into the CPAs at the 11/12 level. These include AME-Arts, Media & Entertainment (Nueva School for the Arts Academy), Innovation STEM (Axis STEM), VA SOL (Business & Hospitality/Vineyard) and BUILD. There is an additional, non-CPA CTE cores: Exercise Science (X-SCI) Academy The “core” structure allows students to experience a sense of community while at school, and allows for instructor collaboration, project-based learning, integrated curriculum, and community building. This progressive approach to comprehensive master scheduling is transforming traditional high schools across the state and is often referred to as a cohort structure or academy structure. All 10th grade cores include the three subjects of English, Social Studies, and CTE each year.
In addition to our CPAs, WHS also offers a wide range of elective courses that offer CTE experiences, including: Health and Nutrition, Welding, Music, Visual & Performing Arts, Early Childhood Development, Auto Mechanics, & Biotechnology & Agriscience.
Big Picture Learning believes that the deepest learning and strongest motivation result from authentic experiences. Students are guided to identify their interests and search out professionals in the community to pursue those interests. Through informational interviews and shadow days, students explore the many opportunities though which they can pursue their goals. Learning Through Interest (LTI) experiences are established and students are given the opportunity to spend two days a week at a worksite with a mentor. At the site, students develop a rigorous real-world project that they can work on with their mentor and back at school with their advisor. These projects become the foundation for the student’s learning plan and provide opportunities for the student to address their learning goals.
